8th edition of Nuit Blanche sur Tableau Noir
Mont-Royal
Avenue reinvents the wheel !

Thursday June 12, 2003
10 p.m. to 2 a.m.
(between Saint-Hubert and De Lorimier)
La
Grande Fresque de Nuit reinvents itself !
Thursday June 12th 2003 , starting at 10
pm, the asphalt will burn up when, once again, as 50 artists will invade
a one kilometre stretch of Mont-Royal avenue to illustrate this year’s
theme at the La Grande Fresque de Nuit : To Reinvent the Wheel, a popular
French expression twisted around to permit artists to renew themselves
and their art.
As in previous
years, the artists must draw their inspiration from a given theme. Our
theme this time around will be "To re-invent the wheel", a
popular French expression twisted around to permit artists to renew
themselves and their art. Rather than squares like the previo us years,
the painters will each have a big round surface as canvas, on Mont-Royal
Avenue.
La Grande Fresque de Nuit is a big part of the 4-day
event of Nuit Blanche sur Tableau Noir. Just imagine the scene : in
the magical glow of an urban evening, the barren pavement of a commercial
avenue becomes an over-sized canvas for some fifty artists, who juggle
paint brushes and rollers in a passionate outburst of creative images.
A New Approach
Many important European and American cities have integrated
street painting sessions into their most popular summer festivals. But
Nuit Blanche sur Tableau Noir has completely redefined the status of
street painting by giving it centerstage and complementing it with original
and often surprising dimensions. In the early summer of 2002, Nuit Blanche
sur Tableau Noir presented its 7th exciting edition. A crowd of over
300 000 people – our biggest ever – gathered on Mont-Royal
Avenue !
For 8
years in a row, this activity has given an opportunity for several artists
to demonstrate their talent and has allowed, ever so simply, for the
public to establish a contact with them during this creative process.
Interaction between the artist and the spectator can’t be avoided:
it can even change the course of the art work !
For more information concerning the participating artists,
visit the official site of the event at www.tableaunoir.com , or make
your way to the Marché des Arts (Cartier street, north and south
of Mont-Royal avenue). For three days, many Grande Fresque de Nuit participants
will be exposing previous works.
Nuit
Blanche sur Tableau Noir starts with a parade !
At 5h30 on Thursday June 12, don’t miss the Artistic
Car parade that will start on Mont-Royal avenue from Mentana street,
all the way to the Parc des Compagnons de St-Laurent (Mont-Royal, corner
of Cartier street), where the Art-Cars will be exposed all weekend.
In case
of rain, La Grande Fresque de Nuit will be held the following night,
Friday June 13th at 10pm.
The
public's eyes are riveted on artist Philippe Mayer while he creates
one of the temporary works of La Grande Fresque de nuit.
