Mont-Royal Avenue reinvents the wheel !

Nuit Blanche sur Tableau Noir, the Street Painting event in Montreal, will be holding its 8th edition from June 12th to June 15th. Between Saint-Hubert and De Lorimier streets, Mont-Royal Avenue will be hosting this colourful festival. There will be various artistic activities, such as street painting, sculpting, poetry and music.

The Theme

As in previous years, the artists must draw their inspiration from a given themeOur theme this time around will be "To re-invent the wheel", a popular French expression twisted around to permit artists to renew themselves and their art. Rather than squares like the previo us years, the painters will each have a big round surface as canvas, on Mont-Royal Avenue.

The Program

La Grande Fresque de Nuit is a big part of the 4-day event of Nuit Blanche sur Tableau Noir. Just imagine the scene : in the magical glow of an urban evening, the barren pavement of a commercial avenue becomes an over-sized canvas for some fifty artists, who juggle paint brushes and rollers in a passionate outburst of creative images.

Back for the 2nd year, the Arts Market !

On Cartier Street, just near the Parc des Compagnons de Saint-Laurent, the public has an opportunity to meet and chat with the artists who participate in Nuit Blanche sur Tableau Noir. All styles are gathered in thirtysomething kiosks over a three-day period, in order to please just about everyone. The simplicity and togetherness of the event creates an atmosphere conducive to a certain rapprochement between local artists and the general public. In its first year, this innovative event has triggered nothing but positive reactions from the artists involved. From June 13 to June 15, on Cartier Street, north and south of Mont-Royal Avenue.

Bring the music !

Each year, NBTN is happy to mix music and visual arts for the pleasure of your senses! Be it by means of improvised imagery and musical themes, or as a concert event, the NBTN public has been delighted to see many artists in action, such as Chango Family (2002) or Mes Aïeux (1999). This year, NBTN is proud to welcome a unique and extremely affable artist, Tomas Jensen!

Tomas Jensen’s show will be quite particular. He will not only perform humorous and social choruses with his band, the Faux Monnayeurs (counterfeit money), he will also be accompanied by the Artist-Painter-Performer, Luc Boisclair !

9 other bands will also perform on the outdoors stage at the Main Site, from Friday June 13th 3pm to Sunday June 15th 6pm. Complete program is available on the www.tableaunoir.com website.

Something new : poets share an evening with painters, musicians… and you !

Titled "Poème Parking", this activity will bring poets, painters and musicians together in a live event, on Friday June 13th, 9pm on the Main Site, on Mont-Royal Avenue just in front of the Parc des Compagnons de St-Laurent (2 streets east from Papineau). Eleven poets will inspire six painters that will be teamed up to share a page of an opened book, painted on the Mont-Royal Avenue. Two live musicians will play as each poet presents their opus. That’s something not to be missed !

Art-Car : 3 artistic cars on display !

Nuit Blanche sur Tableau Noir introduces a spectacular new project this year, with the creation of 3 artistic cars, modified by visual arts artists ! This new project also marks a new collaboration between the street-painting event and the Just For Laughs Festival, where the cars will also be shown, later on this summer.

The kids won’t get bored at NBTN !

Nuit Blanche sur Tableau Noir also proposes popular activities for children. They allow the children to express their minds through art. Kids dreams on Blackboard is a street painting activity for little aspiring artists. The kids can take part in arts and crafts. For the finishing touch, make-up artists will expertly transform the little ones’ faces to their fancy! June 14th and 15th, from 10h30 am to 5 pm at the Main site. Perhaps some will discover a new passion!

The History

Created in 1996, Nuit Blanche sur Tableau Noir aims to promote visual arts by presenting participative, popular and free activities for the general public. In order to achieve this goal, the artists monopolize Mont-Royal avenue to express their art before the public’s eyes. Every year, there are approximately one hundred participants. Everything is free of charge and presented outdoors on Mont-Royal avenue, therefore allowing everyone to discover visual arts. The notorious artistic richness of the Plateau is taken one step higher thanks to this colorful festival.

In less than 8 years, the event has succeeded in becoming an important part of Montreal’s festivals. It now welcomes over 300 000 spectators over a four day period. So, from June 12th to June 15th, get your paintbrushes out and get ready to Reinvent the wheel !
